The other obvious hip hop choice is Straight Outta Compton by N.W.A, but it's pretty full on for a newcomer to rap, abundant with misogyny and violence and swearing so Midnight Maruaders by A Tribe Called Quest could be a better fit, maybe even some Beastie Boys.

I used to listen to Kaiser Chiefs and Feeder until I got Doolittle and Dinosaur Jr's best of, they started me off on the path to musical discovery, the only album I had before those two that I'll still listen to is Arctic Monkey's debut.

Country Death Song by Violent Femmes should've been in your top five, and I'd like to suggest Alright by Supergrass since it is alright.

Just finished up episode #40. I recently saw Yes with Asia opening here in Oklahoma. It was the original lineup of Asia(Howe, Wetton, Palmer, Downes,) and the current lineup of Yes was (Squire, Howe, White, with Benoit David and Oliver Wakeman). Both bands put on a great show and while I would've prefered Jon Anderson singing for Yes the new guy does a great job and it allowed to play songs like Machine Messiah and Tempus Fugit from the Drama album.

My favorite progressive rock albums are
Yes-Close the the Edge, Fragile, Relayer, Going For the One, The Yes Album, and 90125

King Crimson-In the Court...In the Wake of Poseidon, Red(great peformances by Bill Bruford and John Wetton), and Discipline

Genesis-Nursery Cryme & Selling England By the Pound

Gentle Giant-S/T, Power & The Glory, & Octopus

ELP-I like everything up to Brain Salad Surgery. I know they get a bad rap, but if you don't go past that album you'll find a band full of energy and great ideas.

U.K.- S/T After they lost Allan Holdsworth I lose interest

Hawkwind-Space Ritual Not a huge fan of the band, but my vinyl copy I inherited from my uncle has treated me well.

Yet another great podcast guys. I'm a big fan of Belle & Sebastian, and Tigermilk is indeed a great album (although like another one of your listeners, I would also pick Sinister as their definitive release). I always thought that if they replaced "Judy and the dream of horses" with "My wandering days are over" on Sinister, it would have been an even more perfect album. MWDAO would make such an awesome closer.

I've never really been into Yes, although in all honesty I probably haven't given them enough of a chance. I have heard "Fragile" and found it quite dated - but as you guys said, it's probably one of those things you appreciate much more having grown up with it.

In terms of other prog music, I'd highly recommend the 1999 progressive metal album "Scenes from a memory" by Dream Theater. While I'm not a massive fan of either progressive or metal, they combined them to stunning effect here. Certainly an album to lose yourself in.

Your list about songs which describe themself (or do what they say on the tin) is an interesting one. Here's some thoughts:

Wilco - Less than you think
[A 15 minute track which only includes about 3 minutes of normal music, before it turns into a 12 minute drone of feedback. Describes itself perfectly!]

    Blur - Sweet song
[Could also replace Sweet with Good, Mellow, etc.]

Badly Drawn Boy - This song
    [Indeed]

Belle & Sebastian - This is just a modern rock song
    [Hmmm...not sure about "rock"]

David Bowie - Song for Bob Dylan
    [Actually, more for Robert Zimmerman.]

My Morning Jacket - Wordless chorus

    The Cure - Lovesong

    The Doves - Pounding
    [Those drums!]

Special mention to Nick Cave's album "The good son" which included these:

    - The weeping song
    - The ship song
    - The hammer song
    - The witness song

[These were apparently working titles which became the actual titles.]

And wouldn't any song called "Untitled" (of which they are many) also be eligible?

And just to mix things up a bit, an album which describes itself:

Derek & The Dominos - Layla and other assorted love songs

Anyway, I'll stop now before I spend all day listing more :-)

Anyway, keep up the entertaining podcasts guys.

    Cheers from Australia,
    Jeremy.

P.S. Great to hear a mention of "It takes a nation of millions" by Public Enemy. Truly a great rap/hip-hop album - I'm not a big fan of that genre, but I love this album. Just like "Kind of blue" is the jazz album for people who don't like jazz, this is the rap album for people who don't like rap. I'm hoping this will be featured in an upcoming podcast!

    Gents,
Another good one and glad Gary was kind to Tigermilk, one of my babies too Stephen!

Ok onto the themes and 1)music that does what it says on the tin-

B&S - This is just a modern rock song (ok it's ironic but still)
Beatles - I'm So Tired (apparently Lennon stayed up for 48 hours before performing this, sounds like it too!!)
Can't think of anymore just now.

Formative albums?? Well it's a cliche now but The Stone Roses was my epiphany. I'd liked music before but this was a fusion of everything I loved.

Oh and by the way Stephen, Her Majesty was the last track the Beatles recorded, well it's the last track on Abbey Road anyway. God I'm such a nitpicker, don't ban me :-)

posted by: King Ink on Mon, 8/10 10:46 AM EDT

Jeremy beat me to 'The Good Son' as an album that does what it says on the tin so I've not really got anymore to add to that.

As far as my own little musical journey goes, around 10/11 my first proper album buys were all greatest hits, Paul Simon's, Simon and Garfunkel's,The beatles number 1's album and The Beach Boys'. Then I had a brief foray into rap with Eminem and Dr Dre etc, but quickly moved onto Nu-Metal which grew into bands like the White Stripes and the Kings Of Leon and has just kinda kept going from there although I'd probably put David Bowie down as the thing to really get me into searching out music and listening to lengthy back catalogues.

Tigermilk is a great album but I again would have to agree that I prefer Sinister to it. I'm surprised Stephen considers Dear Catastrophe Waitres as B&S just repeating themselves, as it's pretty different to their earlier albums and far superior to Fold Your Hands... which is, besides a few notable exceptions, just a watered down and slightly lazy version of their earlier albums. DCW packs far more of a punch and has some real classics on it, I love pretty much every song on there and I do also really like The Life Pursuit, such a quality group.

On another topic what's everyone's opinion on Florence and the Machine? A lot of hype around the lady has caused a bit of a love them or hate them feeling. I myself really enjoy the album, especially 'My Boy Builds Coffins'. Thoughts?

There was no one key moment for me. I mean, my parents didn't own records apart from my mum who had a readers digest 'best of the sixties' ten CASSETTE box set. It was always being played in the car. Such masterpieces as 'Winchester Catherdral'.

Moving forwards, the early eighties influenced me, but more stuff like The Mighty Wah 'Story Of The Blues', songs i'd hear only twice but never forget.

I then bought a lot of simple minds and u2 albums. In 1989 I bought the first Stone Roses album but didn't really have that great magical moment until around March 1990 when I heard The Fall in session of John Peel. I then bought 'Extricate' by The Fall. That was it. At least, until I bought Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys and realised bands considered 'indie' were not in fact, the be all and end all.

Another great podcast guys - I've only recently succumbed to the loveliness of B&S in the past few months and am pleased to say that I'm glad I did - Sinister being my favorite so far.

My older brother was massively into Prog Rock in the 70's, so growing up I had the fortunate (or unfortunate) pleasure of hearing all the prog giants of the time - Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Steve Hackett etc - all at the tender age of 7 years old, and it did me no harm in the long run, I think... although the story on the back of Genesis plays Live freaked me out a bit!

Keep up the good work chaps, look forward to your thoughts on Public Enemy, i'm sure you were both giving it the bad-ass mofo moves while listening to it!

It was probably the opening bars of Joy Division's first album for me. I had heard only a little of their reputation, when my sister got a lend of it from guy we know who likes to DJ. of course the stark cover made it even more mysterious, so i had to get a hold of their second album, that took weeks of study in the dark of my bedroom before i emerged a changed man. The DJ guy tried one more time to crack my sister with another album of twisted beauty, namely Orbital's Snivilisation, but she resisted and ran back to comforts of britpop, but I was hooked.

Hey, did anyone mention Rock & Roll by Led Zep for eponymous tracks?
    - also suggest Confusion by New Order (they may have been confused from some medication when editing that one)
    - It Doesn't Matter by Chemical Brothers as it's filler on an otherwise excellent album
    - Perfect by The The

personally i've always felt that tony wilson et al had some idea about what they were doing, (especially martin hannett R.I.P.) although wilson did make some severe mistakes, after all he didn't sign the fall or the smiths or the stone roses, but for some reason he did sign the happy mondays (good lord) ultimately factory was all about the escapism of working class punk lovers.

As wilson said 'punk was all about saying F**K you, but sooner or later someone was going to want to say i'm F**ked' factory was to me a real landmark in music and it really is a shame that it folded on the positive side, at least it was finished before oasis inevitably came strolling in giving wilson an earful about being gods or whatever noel thinks he is.

So in conclusion kids, a part of me is glad that factory will never be revived, unlike rough trade which is going downhill fast. (Duffy? Yuck)

I think I saw that Factory doc before, there are a few of them but all really enjoyable. ever since I first saw the story on Rock Family Trees I was blown away by the adventurousness of this label, I then picked up a random biography of Shaun Ryder and the whole scene and was falling about laughing, how could Hooky, Barney and co produce such dark music?
I would agree Martin Hannett extracted some genius recordings from these bands, his work on the Mondays' Bummed album easily beats the slightly dated sound on their huge selling follow up. And he produced Magazine's best album Correct Use Of Soap.
Also having Peter Saville in partnership to complete the creative group was inspired as there was a continuity to the defining packaging. I also loved his imaginings of Suede's evocative lyrics.

I saw the story of Stiff records last night again on BBC4 (great channel- also loved the recent 50's jazz docs, and the story on how the 60's britpoppers sold the blues back to the US). the antics of Stiff were almost even more hilarious than Factory. I rue that record companies don't seem to risk such expenditures anymore and only have safe signings who are following a trend. We'll never get stories like this again

posted by: Ciaran on Sat, 8/22 10:06 AM EDT

I also saw the stiff doc, it was really good all its best groups got some decent airtime, my only complaint is why on earth as pete waterman featured the man is a disgrace to music, and everything he said was rubbish, and he's arrogant as hell and he always gets confused when people bad mouth him and his records can he not see how hopelessly commercial and fake his music is?

The mind boggles, anyway straight after the stiff doc, was a documentary about Ian Dury and i have to say that he was a intelligent, thoughtful, liberal and charming man and i had alot of time for him, very sad that he contracted polio so young, and ultimately was too sick to perform during the final months of his life.

Anyway this is King Ink signing off til next podcast.

Nice! I like! My ugg boots arrived today, I'm very pleased with them. So silky smooth and soft I can't believe it. I researched the whole ugg thing last year but decided not to order because I really couldn't afford a pair. This year I read about Whooga's in a fashion forum and decided to give them a try. I ordered a size too small initially and had to return them for a 6 which was a bit annoying but eventually worth the wait, I'm a 5.5 in most shoes but ugg boots sometimes vary between 5.5 and 6. I probably should have measured my foot, anyway I'm very pleased..
