We tackle two sacred cows today, The Aphex Twin (the revered Brahma Bull of the IDM movement) and The Rolling Stones - rock & roll institution and the world's favourite band. However, what will Stephen and Gary make of them. Will we have garlands hung or beefburgers frying?

    I have listened to and enjoyed your podcast for a while and often agree with your views. However you couldn't be more wrong about Let it Bleed. Did you even listen to the album or just force pre-conceived prejudices on your listeners ?

    Let it Bleed is one of the 4 greatest Stones albums which ranks it in amongst the very best that pop/rock can offer.

    Track by Track:

    Gimme Shelter - Possesses a genuine sense of doom menace, awesome riff, sensational lyrics and a great uncredited performance by Merry Clayton. Listen to it again before making lame tired comments.

    Love in Vain - Fantastic country blues, yes middle class white guys from Kent can play the blues.

    Country Honk - And country too. Yes, it's ramshackle but that's the POINT.

    Live With Me - Classic Stones rocker with throwaway and funny lyrics. It's sexy. Listen to one of the best drums/bass combos in full flight Wyman/Watts

    Let It Bleed - Country again and yes, it works again. Wonderful Jagger performance, great lyrics.

    Midnight Rambler - Can't believe you failed to even mention this one. Live version eclipses this, but awesome work particularly from Richards and a menacing Jagger.

    You Got the Silver - Beautiful soulful ballad with a wonderful vocal from Keith (his first lead).

    Monkey Man - Again a relative throwaway, but it swings and rocks.

    You Can't Always Get ... - OK you liked this one. It's very very good.

    Dance music is only really worth a listen if it's from France or New York, Moon Safari and Play are both well worth a listen.
    Portishead haven't put a foot wrong in my book, somehow they make what seems to be the same album each time yet something completely different grabs about each one. Pixies did make one new song in 2004 but I don't think it appeared on any album so you're still right. And I know everyone will disagree but I'm such a Radiohead fanboy that I even like Pablo Honey, I know I'm wrong but I like all their albums.
    U2 are the most overrated in my mind, at least the Rolling Stones made Sympathy For The Devil and Satisfaction.
    Keep trying new genres, you've got to review something from the golden age of hip-hop, It Takes A Nation Of Millions is really good, maybe a bit more Trip Hop as well.

    And prog? Pfft

    Thank you young 'un. I like the Rolling Stones I like( a lot of ballads, She's A Rainbow, Sympathy etc), just thought let it bleed was really flaccid and by definition overrated - not as good as people say it is. We said we'd look at sacred cows and we did, eh?

    Hi guys,
    I've been coming up on the back straight for about 9 months and finally caught up, and what an interesting show to reach real time with too!

    I was surprised to both your reactions to the Stones. It's not what I would rate a classic in my own taste, and to prove it I find I've never got round to putting it on my iPod, but on listening again i certainly didn't find it flacid unlike some of their later efforts. If I remember rightly, this and Beggars Banquet are seen as a return to form and roots after Their Satanic Majesties (which certainly was flacid). There are plenty of albums I'd trumpet over this, so I'm not too bothered whether you like it, I was just surprised at how much you disliked it.

    On the subject of bands with unbroken runs of albums, I am not sure about The Beatles - I can visit all their albums and get something out of them except Beatles For Sale, which is a bit of a stinker (and smacks of contractual obligation with all those cover versions). No Reply and Eight Days A Week are good, Im A Loser has merit, but that's about it.

    My nomination is The Go-Betweens. I love all 9 albums. The first is maybe a bit patchy, but I do have a lot of affection for it. But also, they are one of the few bands to successfully reform and produce great new music - it can be done!

    Looking forward to hearing about Close To The Edge. I was introduced to it at 14 and loved it... until punk came along and I felt I had to deny I'd ever heard of it! Eventually I grew up and it has become a firm favourite - though the lyrics are best skirted round. Yes, these are long songs, but there's a lot of meat on them. I can't help but think I wouldn't want to listen to it if I was introduced to it now though - so good luck Stephen.

    It Takes A Nation Of Millions would be a great selection and a bit different for you.

    How to listen to Aphex Twin 'Selected Ambient Works Vol 2'.

    1) Late at night
    2) On headphones
    3) Only one of the two CDs at a time!

    Really looking forward to 'Close To The Edge', one of my all time favourites it must be said.

    The King Of Pop? Billie Jean was genuinely great and 'Off The Wall' was the mans best album. Stephen mentions Jacko's vocal tics, which were very annoying, yet they only came around circa 'Thriller'. 'Off The Wall' is a straight-ahead pop classic.

    There, that's my indie cred blown!

    Great runs? Got to agree with Neal, The Go Betweens first six albums especially.

    Long time no blog! Bangkok life has been pretty hectic of late but I'm now back with a vengeance.

    Prompting me to blog particularly was the Let It Bleed review. David has covered most of what I wanted to say and whilst Let It Bleed is pretty shambolic in places (part of the Stones charm in my opinion) when it's good, it's brilliant. You both casually dismissed Gimme Shelter as a 'one riff song'. Stephen Stephen, shame on thee. It's a classic, quite regularly in the Top 100 'rock' songs of all time reviews, boasting Merry Clayton's incredibly delivery and one of the great opening riffs to any song. Another artist you mentioned in the podcast, Johnny Marr, would not be best pleased. It's his favourite riff from his favourite song. Nonetheless your opinions are passionate and considered and I salute you for it. Just don't go 'too' indie on us, please :-)

    Unbroken great album runs?? hmmm tough one that, B&S are consistently good but Fold your hands wasn't good enough. All of Simon and Garfunkels are good (c'mon Stephen, support me on that one!).
    The Velvets?? (excluding the Doug Yule led Squeeze of course!) I especially like VU which came years later.
    Oh and if Stevie Wonder and Elton John had both stopped in 1976 they'd both be here too :-)

    Looking forward to Tigermilk next, though If you're feeling sinister is of course better. You know it Stephen :-)

    Great Podcast as always!

    When it comes to ambient music, it is kind of tricky I guess. The Aphex Twin album you talked about is more, in my opinion, impressive in the terms of how it was made and produced. The music tends to be a little "cold and scary" for me.

    I really like my ambient to be warmer and calming... One place to start might be the album "Structures from Silence" by Steve Roach. He has a nice website with alot of sound samples.

    I am really looking forward to the next episode... two albums I have. I will do some listening before and see if we still are friends afterwards... He He!

    Keep up the good work! Is there anything I can do to make your podcasting easier for you? Donations? Gifts? Bribes? Toys?

    I really enjoy your podcasts guys, but can't agree with your slamming "Let It Bleed". Gimme Shelter a "one riff song"? Come on lads - you can do better than that!! It's a great album all the way through (and I don't really consider myself a real Stones fan).
    As for artists who have never put a foot wrong I have to mention 4: The Blue Nile, Tim Buckley, Steely Dan and No-Man.

    Keep up the controversy though!!

    Just discovered this podcast and have greatly enjoyed listening through the archive, agreeing and disagreeing with your opinions in equal measure. You're both completely wrong about Let it Bleed, of course, but what would the world be like if we all agreed? We'd be listening to Tindersticks, Yes and the Wedding Present, so I for one welcome the dissent. And thank christ there's another person in the world who thought Grace was all style over substance.
